City Council meets today under new chairman

taylor-globe no background

Thanks to the holiday weekend, City Council will meet today (January 2, 2019) for its first sessions of the new year. And it will do so with a new chairman, Tim Woolley. Woolley was named the chairman by the City Council by a unanimous vote December 18. He replaces Alex Garza, who was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives.

“It is truly an honor to be voted to the chairman by my colleagues, whom I thank for that,” Woolley said. “I will perform my duties to the best of my ability. Alex did a great job, and left big shoes to fill. I can only hope I do as well as he did.”

Garza and Woolley were first elected to City Council in November 2013. Both were re-elected four years later. Garza was the top vote-getter in the November 2017 election, and served as chairman, while Woolley finished second and has been serving as the council’s Pro Tem. When Garza was first elected to the City Council he became the youngest and first minority elected official in Taylor’s history. A life-long resident and graduate of Taylor Center High School, Woolley noted that his first four-year term garnered him a wealth of experience.

Woolley served his country during the Desert Shield and Desert Storm military campaigns in the Middle East. His Army service extended from 1989-92 as a forward observer for field artillery for the 2nd Armored Division, nicknamed “Hell on Wheels.” The unit was originally formed in 1940 under Gen. Charles Scott and made famous under Gen. George Patton in World War II. Tim earned several different medals and citations during his time in the military

He is married to wife Amy. The couple has two children, Dylan and Sarah.

On today’s agenda, the council will decide Woolley’s replacement as Pro Tem. Eventually, the council will also have to fill the vacancy created by Garza’s departure.
